The subject equipment arrived in Karachi Port on purpose built ZPMC vessel for Pakistan International Container Terminal (PICT). It was a worthwhile experience for AMI Project team to coordinate/supervise this operation alongwith ship staff and terminal management.
The operation demanded a good quality seamanship and thorough professional understanding of the job. All improvised off loading arrangements were made on the quay side. These included laying of tracks in small sections thereby enabling the STS to roll out by using ‘three fold purchase’ having deadend and reaving end on the vsl. During the entire operation the ballasting/deballisting of vessel was of prime importance. The weight of the cranes were carefully utilised to break the inertia and to keep check on the speed of the crane during roll off. The whole operation took 3 to 4 hours, however the preparation time was 36 hours.The STS was a mega structure of 1060mts in fully erected position.
